Stadium design

The Penrith Stadium is designed to be the best suburban stadium in Australia and will improve visitor and player experience.

The stadium design has been developed in collaboration with Infrastructure NSW, Venues NSW and Penrith Panthers.

Feedback provided during community consultation in 2022 and 2024 was carefully considered by the project team to inform the design, which will:

  • transform the precinct into a modern venue for sport and entertainment
  • improve the visitor experience with upgraded seating and better views of the field
  • create a multi-use, modern rectangular venue suitable for rugby, football and concerts
  • ensure universal accessibility, safety, and inclusivity for all stadium users
  • enhance the gameday experience through improved food and beverage and amenities
  • activate a precinct that operates not only on event days, but throughout the week
  • boost facilities to better cater for NRL matches and benefit female matches to support the growth of women’s sport.

Design team

The design concepts are developed by Populous, a global architectural design firm specialising in creating environments and venues that draw communities and people together. They have partnered with Tyrrell Studio on the project.

There may be further refinements to the stadium design once a main works contractor has been appointed.

Design principles

Built form and urban design principles guide the design of the development.

We have incorporated these principles to create an inclusive venue, enhancing the game day experience for both fans and players.

Connection to the field

The stadium will bring fans closer to the field with premium views and larger, steeper grandstands, boosting energy, sound and excitement for fans, teams and players.

Inclusive

The stadium focuses on inclusivity, providing features and services for all, including all-gender facilities, augmented hearing systems for the hearing impaired, safe interior finishes for neurodivergent and visually impaired individuals, and diverse food options.

Accessible

A range of accessibility features have been considered to ensure equal experiences for all, including enhanced wayfinding with clear messaging and visual aids to help visitors find their destinations.

Diversity of experience

The stadium features a new seating bowl, concourses, hospitality areas, and wider precincts, offering a diverse range of experiences for the community and sports teams on event and non-event days.

Flexible

The design is flexible for various activities, including sports events, concerts, and community activities. The west training field will be remodeled to create open space for outdoor community, sporting, and entertainment events.

Connection to Country

The precinct applies a Design with Country approach, integrating First Nations history, connections, knowledge, and stories into façade screening, key interior spaces, and throughout the precinct.

Sustainability

The venue targets 5-star Green Star rating, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental performance standards.

Future-proofing

The design will carefully consider and account for future needs, including additional stands, extended roofs, site connections, and adaptations for climate change.

The site

The Penrith Stadium site is bordered by Station Street on the east, Howell Oval on the south, Mulgoa Road to the west, and Ransley Street on the north

The site contains Penrith Stadium, built in the mid-20th Century, and modified since, featuring a modest car park to the north and a training field to the west.
